Hi! 👋🏻 Lots of new people here and it’s ab Hi! 👋🏻 Lots of new people here and it’s about time for a proper intro. I'm Dr. Christine Maren, and here’s a little about me:

❤️I am a mama of 3 young children. My babies were all born in different cities — San Antonio, Austin, and Detroit — because of our medical training and my husband’s military commitments.

❤️I found functional medicine after struggling with pregnancy complications and recurrent miscarriages, and I never turned back. I completed all of the coursework and exams to become certified through @institueforfxmed as IFMCP.

❤️I did residency training in San Antonio and I’m board-certified in family medicine, and licensed in 3 states and counting.

❤️I have been exclusively practicing functional medicine since I joined Amy Myers MD office in Austin in 2016.

❤️I opened my own functional medicine consultative practice in 2017— I have the best patients ever and I’m obsessed with what I do.

❤️Spent a year+ in Detroit for my husband’s spine fellowship training. He has an intense job and gets to dramatically help people. And while we were there I fell in love with Michigan.

❤️I cofounded @heymami.life with my BFF and MD colleague @dralexcarrasco to help other women through the mamihood journey

❤️I’m not your average doctor. I’m rooted in science, but willing to think outside the box if it will help my patients and I can do so safely (ie benefits > risks)

❤️I practice what I preach, and I won’t ask you to do anything I wouldn’t do myself.

Tell me - what do you look for in a doctor? Do you have a doctor who has helped change your life for the better? What made him or her great?
For all the mothers, mothers-at-heart, dog mothers For all the mothers, mothers-at-heart, dog mothers, and every mother in between – thank you for your care and kindness! You make the world go round.

It's #NursesWeek and I am really lucky to have the It's #NursesWeek and I am really lucky to have the BEST team around! Today, I'd like to give a shout out to Ella and Leah, who are both Registered Nurses who work with me.

Ella Soderholm (to my left) is a wicked smart Registered Nurse and Master Nutrition Therapist. She has worked in the healthcare industry for over 15 years, with the past decade dedicated to Functional Medicine and Nutrition. We see things through a similar lens and she is a simply amazing clinician.

Leah Novak (to my right) is also a Registered Nurse and Master Nutrition Therapist. As a Certified Personal Trainer with a degree in Psychology, she brings a really unique (and helpful) skill set to the table. She specializes in supporting our patients through tailored nutrition with the goal of experiencing more vitality, wellness and energy.

More than 2000 years ago Hippocrates said “All D More than 2000 years ago Hippocrates said “All Disease Begins in the Gut.”

Today, you will hear a similar thing from many integrative and functional medicine practitioners.

So what does this even mean?

The collection of organisms in our digestive tract (the gut microbiome) influences our overall health.

A healthy gut microbiome helps us to stay well by improving our digestion and absorption of nutrients.

An imbalanced microbiome, on the other hand, can lead to problems with intestinal permeability (aka leaky gut). This can create inflammation and issues with the immune system, and can be a root cause of:
🚫 Allergies
🚫 Anxiety and depression
🚫 Asthma
🚫 Autoimmune diseases including Hashimotos
🚫 Diabetes
🚫 Eczema
🚫 Food sensitivities
🚫 Obesity
And more!

In functional medicine, much of our focus is on gut health for this reason. Give me a double-tap if you're feeling me on this!
Are you dreaming at night? Do you wake feeling res Are you dreaming at night? Do you wake feeling rested? Do you give yourself enough time to sleep?

Good, quality sleep is critical! If you’re concerned about stress, adrenals, cortisol, thyroid, and/or sex hormones -- don’t neglect this really critical piece of the puzzle.

Sleep is also important for inflammation and detoxification!

Here are 10 strategies for better sleep:
😴 Begin prepping for bedtime 30 minutes before getting in bed
😴 As much as possible, go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day.
😴 Avoid caffeine-containing foods/beverages after 2:00 pm & avoid alcohol for 3 hours prior to bedtime
😴 Take a hot bath with Epsom Salt—raising your body temperature before sleep helps induce sleep & the magnesium from the epsom salt can help you relax!
😴 Avoid any anxiety-producing activities before bed time (watching the news, paying bills, arguments, etc.)
😴 Keep your bedroom dark and cool
😴 Avoid sleeping near electromagnetic fields (EMFs)— like your cell phone, router, baby monitor etc. Keep your phone on airplane mode and shut off the router if possible.
😴 Get morning sunlight and wear blue blocker glasses while working / watching screens
😴 Make exercise a daily habit
😴 Practice stress reduction techniques like prayer, meditation or deep breathing - stress can create a viscous cycle with poor sleep

And if you need some help? One of my favorite products is Quicksilver Scientific Liposomal Melatonin (linked in my bio).

There are lots of other strategies that can be helpful when trying to fall asleep -- share what has worked best for you in the comments below!
