I really don’t have a one-size-fits-all protocol I really don’t have a one-size-fits-all protocol for gut health, but I do have a few favorite probiotics!

A few of the supplements I commonly recommend for patients with digestive complaints include:
➡️a spore forming probiotic (check out @microbiomelabs)
➡️serum derived immunoglobulins
➡️a combination of herbs (used short term for 8-12 weeks)
➡️and digestive enzymes

On the hunt for a new probiotic? I’ve got my favs I mention in the video linked in my bio @drchristinemaren!
Are Detox Symptoms Normal? This is one of the t Are Detox Symptoms Normal?
This is one of the top questions I get from patients about detox.

The answer is yes and no.

Some symptoms are a normal part of cleansing or detox. Some examples include:
➕Low energy
➕Headaches (especially if you’re giving up caffeine)
➕Mild breakouts
➕Changes in bowel movements
➕Sugar cravings
➕Minor changes in mood
➕And frequent urination

However, these detox symptoms should be mild and temporary, not extreme or life-altering.

On the flip side, a detox or cleansing program that fails to support the 3 phases of detoxification may produce some very unpleasant symptoms.

Some warning symptoms of a lousy detox include:
‼️Severe breakouts
‼️Rashes
‼️Constipation or diarrhea
‼️Insomnia
‼️Nausea
‼️Fever, chills, or profuse sweating
‼️Splitting headaches
‼️Worsening of the symptoms you’re trying to relieve
‼️Severe mood swings
‼️Or any new symptoms of concern

I realize some people believe these symptoms are a normal and beneficial part of detoxification.

However, in my clinical experience, suffering isn’t necessary if you’re using the right detox program—one that supports all 3 phases of detoxification.

There is a lot of unnatural pressure imposed on ne There is a lot of unnatural pressure imposed on new mothers these days.

Pressure to get back to work.
Pressure to conform to various parenting ideals (natural and mainstream).
And pressure to get your body back, lose the baby weight, and get rid of those pesky postpartum symptoms.

As a functional medicine doctor specializing in women’s health and a working mama of 3, I understand these pressures intimately.

Especially the getting your body back thing.

The motivation behind this is understandable.

After all, we all want to fit back into our favorite clothes and feel like ourselves again.

Unfortunately, this can lead many well-meaning modern mamas to embark on detoxification programs or cleanses.

This may be fine if you’re not breastfeeding. However, if you are breastfeeding, detoxing or cleansing could harm you (and your baby).

Here’s the deal (pregnant and breastfeeding mamas, listen up).

Research has shown toxins are deposited in urine, stool, sweat, and breast milk. This means that breastfeeding is not the time to be mobilizing stored toxins.

Plus, you really need to focus on nutrient-dense foods to ensure you’re getting enough calories and nutrition to support you and your growing baby.

Instead, breastfeeding mamas should focus on eating a healthy, whole foods-based diet, spending time in nature, hydrating, reducing stress, daily movement (and getting sleep when you can!). Think: nourishment.

If you’re dealing with postpartum symptoms or new symptoms since giving birth, talk to your doctor or a functional medicine doctor (like me) to get to the root cause.

There are certain supplements and lifestyle changes you can make, besides cleansing, to help you reclaim your health.

Do you know who else shouldn’t do a detox? Women planning to become pregnant in less than 3 months.

Pop Quiz!! How Many Phases Of Detoxificatio Pop Quiz!!

How Many Phases Of Detoxification Are There?
➡️A: 1
➡️B: 7
➡️C: 3

The answer is C, there are three phases of detoxification our bodies go through in order to neutralize, bind, and excrete toxins safely.

And each phase must be properly supported for safe and effective detox.

You can learn all about these phases in my new article: How Does Detoxification Work (link in bio).

In the meantime, check out this graphic for an overview of how each of these phases works.

Have you ever experienced unpleasant detox symptoms or an intense healing crisis during or following a cleanse?

It could have been a sign that one of these phases of detox was neglected within the cleansing program.

What organ or system leaps to mind when you think What organ or system leaps to mind when you think about detoxification?

Most people immediately think of: the liver.

And it’s true the liver is one of our most valuable, loyal, and resilient organs of detoxification…

…but it doesn’t work alone.

Our bodies contain a brilliant network of organs, systems, and cells that all work together to identify, capture, neutralize, bind, filter, and eliminate various toxins.

And with over 84,000 chemicals accounted for in our environment plus the toxic byproducts our bodies make, that’s a lot of toxins to process!

The liver is uber important to detoxification, but it works in concert with the gut and digestive system — which includes the gallbladder and healthy/ regular 💩.

The skin is also important, which is one reason I love sauna.

The kidneys, lymphatic system, cell membranes, and even the lungs also play important roles.

You can learn more about these organs and systems of detox and their function in my new article: "How Does Detoxification Work?" Link in bio.

We’ll be back tomorrow with more details on the various phases of detoxification and why they matter.
