Functional Medicine

"Functional Medicine asks how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual."

Functional Medicine

I have always been a curious person, especially when it comes to health and wellness. Moreover, when it comes to disease, I have always been asking “why?” I found answers in functional medicine after utilizing this approach to address my own health concerns, which included chronic digestive ills and blood sugar issues. In my case, I realized that my constellation of symptoms just didn’t add up and that seemingly unrelated issues were somehow connected. Taking multiple prescription medications to mask symptoms was not an option for me. I was trying to understand why… to find the cause and connect the dots… and to prevent chronic disease. Functional medicine established the framework and tools that made sense to me, and addressed the subtleties of my health concerns. I quickly realized that my family, friends and patients would benefit from this approach, as well. My own health issues uncovered my passion, and inspired my practice of medicine.

I completed my training as a Certified Practitioner with The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFMCP). IFM now has a Center for Functional Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.

Functional Medicine:

  • Addresses the underlying causes of disease.
  • Addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.
  • Looks at the interaction of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that can influence health.
  • Supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.
  • Engages both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership.
