As a mother of 3, with years of experience helping As a mother of 3, with years of experience helping women achieve healthy pregnancies, I can tell you that reducing your body burden by avoiding chemical toxins is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself and your new baby.

Yes, avoiding chemicals in food, such as additives, preservative, dyes, pesticides, herbicides, stabilizers, petroleum-based ingredients, excitotoxins like MSG, etc., is very important and highly recommended.

However, there’s a vast and insidious source of chemical toxins that most of us are completely (or largely) unaware of: household chemicals…and they’re hiding all over our homes.

Household toxins are easy to overlook because most of them are invisible, odorless (or have a pleasant smell), and come from a variety of seemingly harmless (and even enjoyable) sources. Plus, we don’t hear a whole lot about them on the news vs. other things like toxins in food, drinks, or pharmaceuticals.

However, most households are harboring a toxic soup of dangerous chemicals. Many of which are proven endocrine-disruptors (aka: reproductive toxin) carcinogens, obesogens, and lung irritants.

So how exactly are we ingesting these toxins if we’re unaware of them? Household chemicals enter our bodies in three different ways: through eating or drinking, breathing (and indoor air quality in most homes is not great), and via our skin (think face creams, makeup, hand sanitizer, etc.).

The good news is, these toxins can be eliminated and/or minimized without a ton of effort. The first step is to learn what they are and where they come from, so you can get them out of your life!

We’ll be chatting some common household chemicals over the next few days, but you can go ahead and grab my free ebook on detoxing your home in my bio, @drchristinemaren!
It’s well documented that thyroid and digestive It’s well documented that thyroid and digestive issues often coexist, and the liver is the most affected organ in both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Gastrointestinal symptoms of thyroid dysfunction are numerous, and include:
‼️trouble swallowing
‼️heartburn
‼️indigestion
‼️reduced acid production
‼️nausea or vomiting
‼️gallbladder complaints
‼️abdominal discomfort
‼️gas
‼️bloating
‼️diarrhea
‼️constipation

It’s also been well-documented that an imbalance in gut bacteria/gut infections can affect the thyroid; so it’s a two-way street.

Last week we covered in detail some exciting new a Last week we covered in detail some exciting new advanced preventative testing options for early cancer screening, heart disease, and over 500 other conditions.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I am absolutely thrilled to be offering these through my functional medicine practice because I truly believe this is the future of medicine.

So, why aren’t doctors, clinics, and insurance companies rushing to offer and cover these tests?

The plain truth is insurance companies largely govern the modern medical system.

And insurance companies are not incentivized to cover life-saving preventative tests like these because most people don’t stay with the same insurance company long-term.

This exemplifies our broken medical system…yet I’m confident things will shift.

I predict these tests will eventually become part of standard preventative care and will be less expensive and widely accepted for reimbursement.

For example, genetic testing was very pricey just a few years ago. But now, anyone can order a 23andme test for under $100.00.

You can help by spreading the word about these life-saving tests!
Yes, they are an investment. However, your integrative functional medicine doctor can help you decide which ones are worth it based on the risk-benefit ratio.

If you’re an existing patient of ours, reach out via the patient portal with any questions or to schedule a test.

I also encourage you to learn more about these new preventative tests by reading my new blog article, “These New Tests Are Transforming Preventative Healthcare", link in my bio or on my website drchristinemaren.com!
Think about it: many of us are willing to invest i Think about it: many of us are willing to invest in our financial health by having retirement accounts, but what good is that investment if we aren’t well enough to enjoy the years of retirement? Is it fair to say that both our retirement AND our health are worthy investments?

The unfortunate truth is that health is a luxury in our modern day world.

But is there anything more important than your health? Guess what is more expensive than investing in your health? Poor health!

Ultimately, good health helps us to be more productive at home and at work. Good health means we feel better and perform better all the way around.

Poor health can cost a lot. Missed days of work, babysitter, etc. Poor or even less than optimal health today can often mean serious chronic health problems later.

Remember that your health as an investment, and prioritizing the things that promote health is vital. AND YOU ARE WORTH THE INVESTMENT!
Let’s talk about the #1 killer of women and men Let’s talk about the #1 killer of women and men in America: heart disease.

There are many different schools of thought on what constitutes a heart-healthy lifestyle and why some people are at greater risk.

However, nearly everyone can agree that early and accurate detection is life-saving.

This is why I’m so pumped to offer two advanced screenings for heart disease, one for anyone over 40 and one for those at higher risk.

The first is the coronary calcium scan (also known as a heart scan), a specialized X-ray that measures hard plaque in your arteries. This one has been around for a while.

The coronary artery calcium score is currently the most accessible (i.e. inexpensive and widely available) way to detect silent heart disease and is a strong predictor of future cardiac events. Therefore, I recommend it to many of my patients over 40, especially those with a strong family history of heart disease and/or high LDL cholesterol.

But we now have a new tool in our repertoire known as the coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for those at higher risk of heart disease.

Images captured in the CCTA exam are processed by Cleerly software—a set of artificial intelligence-based algorithms—and translated into measurements and reports that show us:
🎯How much plaque and which types are in the arteries
🎯If there is any narrowing of the arteries, also known as stenosis, which can block blood flow

This is huge because it gives us a precise new tool to better analyze a person’s risk for heart attack and provide individualized treatments to address the problem and prevent future issues.

With heart disease afflicting so many people—even the healthy ones, the more information we have, the better. The caveat to this is that it is definitely an investment and requires IV contrast. It’s not right for everyone so talk to your cardiologist.
